You might have gathered from my previous posts or social media accounts that I have just returned from a fab holiday in Les Deux Alpes. Following my previous post of “Places to go in Les Deux Alpes”, which mainly included bars; I thought I would give you a brief review and some tips of a packaged holiday.

For the first time, I decided to book a packaged holiday with Crystal Ski Holidays. This included flights, ski carriage, half board hotel, ski pass and transfer to/from the resort.

Flights

Cardiff- Chambery

I love flying from Cardiff, it’s a small but easy airport to get to and get around (we even have a Costa there now!). However, on this occasion I was in Switzerland for work before hand so actually flew out from Bristol. Our flights were Cardiff to Chambery (another tiny airport). On our way back Chambery wasn’t the best of airports as it’s so small and really busy, but it did the job! Oh, yeah and it’s ridiculously expensive as most airports so it’s always worth buying a nice fresh baguette before you leave the resort. Once I collected Adam (my other half) from arrival, process was really easy. We were met by Crystal reps and sent to our coach. The journey is 2.5hrs to Les Deux Alpes from the airport.

Hotel

We stayed in La Belle Etoile ***

We were greeted on arrival at about 8.30pm and managed to get food before they finished serving at 9pm. The food was absolutely incredible! We got half board, breakfast and a 4 course meal every evening ( I have never eaten so much for a week running!)

The hotel was a 5 minute walk to the Diable chairlift and about 10 minutes max to the Jandri Express (the main cable car). Really well situated, it also had a spa (jacuzzi and sauna) which you can use for free any time by booking in advance. Each room has 30 minutes to themselves, which is lovely at the end of a long day on snow! Staff are mostly Italians and all very friendly. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Skiing/ Snowboarding

The resort is really vast and you can access the glacier which is lovely to ski down. I have been to many places on snow and I can say in 6 days we didn’t manage to cover all slopes, so it is pretty vast! However, if you are a snowboard beginner I would stay away from the green slopes! Most of the green slopes are narrow and fairly icy roads, which are a nightmare if you are a beginner snowboarder. We did thankfully find a beginner area where Adam could get used to the board again. *N.B* If you are a beginner I would highly suggest you book lessons, it is worth it! I have a lot of experience so I was able to help and teach Adam, if not it’s a waste of your time and energy. Go book a lesson! You will enjoy your holiday a lot more and get more out of your skiing/ snowboarding time.

Day 2, we decided to go for Blues and Reds and get the main cable car Jandri Express up. This side of the mountain is really nice with lots of variety. We were also blessed by a lot of powder. Make sure you get yourself a map of the resort so you have an idea of where you’re going, they are really helpful!

Apres- ski

I would suggest you go and read my previous blog which includes a list of bars where Apres-Ski is a must! Fair to say the French certainly know how to do a good aper-ski.

Pros and Cons of a Packaged Holiday

Pros:

  • Not having to worry about food, breakfast & half board booked every day
  • Although I missed out on them, Crystal do promote a lot of offers which can save you money (e.g. 2 ski passes for the price of 1)
  • Once you book it all online you don’t have to worry about anything. Price wasn’t too different from booking all separate
  • Transfer is included- if there is only 2 of you it sometimes becomes more expensive to book a minibus

Cons:

  • As you have your meals booked and pre-paid for, you are less likely to go and explore other restaurants in resort
  • On our first morning we asked our rep about good places to go for drink and to explore and we weren’t really given any local knowledge. We ended up exploring anyways and found great places, but some more tips would have been fab.

We loved it, and I want to go back! Hope you have a fab time if you end up going to Les Deux Alpes.

Until next time,

Take care!

x
